Hey 👋,

I'm Zhen - I studied Materials Science at Oxford and Aerospace Engineering/Physics at MIT as a Jardine Scholar. Now, I am an AI Research Engineer in London.

What I am up to now!

I am an Innovation Fellow at 10 Downing Street!

Previously

I have worked as a software engineer and AI researcher across different industries, including on machine learning for commercial aviation at a pre-seed stage startup and LLM-powered bizops and automation software at a Series A company.

It feels like every 6 weeks, the whole landscape is transformed!

In 2023-2024, I was an exchange student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) conducting research in architecting additively manufactured metamaterials for rotordynamic systems such as rocket engine turbopumps and aeroengines in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. My favourite courses at MIT were 8.323 Relativistic Quantum Field Theory I and 8.962 General Relativity. Painful but worth it.

In 2022, I interned at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the Materials Development & Manufacturing Technology Group (357H) with Dr Richard Otis and Samad Firdosy, doing a mixture of materials engineering and machine learning research.

Inspirations / Curiosities

The most inspiring people of all-time for me are (no order): Sir Frank Whittle (RAF), Matthias Maurer (ESA), Morris Chang (TSMC), Richard Feynmann (!), Richard Hamming (You and Your Research), Ben Rich (Skunkworks), Neri Oxman (MIT), David Pocock (AUS Rugby), and Brian Greene (Physics).

Areas that I can't help but be drawn to:

  • Materials, Aerospace & Manufacturing
  • Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning
  • Theoretical Physics

Between 2021 and 2023, I hosted a podcast with my brother on science, technology and entrepreneurship. Check it out here!
