NASA JPL Lunar COLDArm + Oxford Moon Meeting

A metal that is also a glass?

Today, in the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics Oxford (AOPP) department, I presented the work of my mentors Douglas Hofmann and Scott Roberts from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory on Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG) Gears for the Lunar COLDArm! Cooled over 1000C/s, BMGs reduce the mass of gears by 40%, unlocks 30% more energy (w.r.t Curiosity Rover) as you don't have to heat the lubricants in cold environments and is x2 harder than steel! A magic material indeed.

Thanks to Prof Neil Bowles for inviting me to the Oxford Moon Meeting and Katherine Shirley for organising the event in the University of Oxford, Department of Physics. It was my first time holding a moon globe! Oxford has many phenomenal researchers in the individual earth science, physics, engineering and materials science departments. Bringing everyone together at Space @ Oxford allows us to do incredible work!
